Stop the bleeding

In the basic course 'Stop the bleeding' you will learn how to recognise life-threatening bleeding and how to stop it by pressing on the wound, applying tourniquet and/or clogging the wound with haemostatic gauze. After finishing this course positively, you can stop a severe bleeding according to the guideline 'Stop the bleeding - save a life'. This course is suitable for anyone over 16 years of age such as interested citizens, company emergency workers, first aiders, security personnel, stewards, (non-tactical) police personnel and firefighters.

Background

Bystanders and non-medical aid workers can significantly increase the chances of survival of victims of (bomb) attacks and major accidents. By adequately compensating for serious blood loss immediately, lives are saved. It is not inconceivable that in the future the Netherlands will be hit by a (bomb) attack or mass shooting, now that such attacks are increasingly common in Western Europe. The threat of terrorism, also in the Netherlands, remains as high as ever. The injuries during an attack are usually accompanied by life-threatening blood loss, as a result of which the chances of survival of victims quickly diminish as time passes.
