In the basic course 'Stop the bleeding' you will learn how to recognise life-threatening bleeding and how to stop it by pressing on the wound, applying tourniquet and/or clogging the wound with haemostatic gauze. After finishing this course positively, you can stop a severe bleeding according to the guideline 'Stop the bleeding - save a life'. This course is suitable for anyone over 16 years of age such as interested citizens, company emergency workers, first aiders, security personnel, stewards, (non-tactical) police personnel and firefighters.
Bystanders and non-medical aid workers can significantly increase the chances of survival of victims of (bomb) attacks and major accidents. By adequately compensating for serious blood loss immediately, lives are saved. It is not inconceivable that in the future the Netherlands will be hit by a (bomb) attack or mass shooting, now that such attacks are increasingly common in Western Europe. The threat of terrorism, also in the Netherlands, remains as high as ever. The injuries during an attack are usually accompanied by life-threatening blood loss, as a result of which the chances of survival of victims quickly diminish as time passes.

The course 'Stop the bleeding' is given according to the guidelines from the RadboudUMC. This course has become the national standard and has been developed by VUmc. Dr. Leo Geeraedts (trauma surgeon in VUmc) and VUmc Academy. With this, Achterkamp has developed expertise in the field of blood loss and shock, to increase the knowledge and skills about stopping life-threatening blood loss.
The course is taught by instructors from medical departments within the government and has years of operational experience in the field of medical support both at home and abroad. The ISEG and IPSU instructors are trained and certified by the VUmc instructor 'Stop the bleeding - save a life'.
This basic course 'Stop the bleeding' takes 2.5 hours (+/-)
After attending the course each participant will receive an official certificate from the VUmc. This certificate is valid for 4 years and gives the student international coverage.
